The Coaster of Hearts crochet pattern is perfect for a last minute Valentine’s day gift.
It took me only a few hours to make and uses up small amounts of yarn, which is a huge bonus! And, the pattern is free!
You could easily make an entire set of them over a few days.
The Coaster of Hearts is worked in the round and created using just one stitch: double crochet (UK terms).
This design is perfect for someone who has crocheted in the round before and now wants to try some colourwork in the round.

Intermediate
King Cole Cottonsoft DK (8 Ply); 210 m (230 yards) per 100g; 100% Cotton
13g / 28 m / 30 yards in Coral
7g / 15 m / 16 yards in Pink
I recommend Addi Swing, as it’s an ergonomic hook and it suits my style of crocheting – which is like holding a knife or buy a standard crochet hook.
11 sc x 11 rows to measure 5 x 5 cm (2 x 2 in) using a 3 mm hook or size needed to obtain stated gauge.
One size: Diameter: 12 cm / 4.5 in
The stitch count is indicated at the end of every round or row. Stitch counts are shown like this: (12 sts)
Sections to be repeated are indicated within squared brackets [ ], with the number of repeats written after.
If there is a repeat within a repeat, then these brackets are used: { }. This is the case for round 10.
Work in a continuous spiral without slip stitching into the first st in the round.
When changing colour, join the new yarn on the last yarn over of the previous stitch, unless otherwise stated.
Always sew in the ends on the wrong sides of your work.
Multiple stitches worked in one stitch.
UK Terms
US Terms
When you are crocheting with multiple colours, there will be times when you need to carry the yarn not in use at the back of the work. This is known as stranded colorwork and the unused yarn “floats” on the wrong side of the work. Carry the unused yarn behind the work by crocheting over the unused yarn every three or four stitches, making sure that the unused yarn does not show through to the right side of the work.

The pattern for the coaster starts at the centre of a circle and works out to the edge.
Rnd 1: With Coral, and working into a magic ring, 1 ch, 8 dc. Ss into the first st in the round. (8 sts)
Rnd 2: 1 ch, [2 dc in next st] eight times. Ss into the first st in the round. (16 sts)
Gently pull the end from the magic ring on round 1 and sew in the end.
Prepare to join Pink on the next round and remember to change colour on the last yarn over of the previous stitch.
Rnd 3: 1 ch, [with Coral, 1 dc, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc, with Pink, 2 dc in next st] four times. With Coral, ss into the first st in the round. (24 sts)
Rnd 4: 1 ch, [with Coral, 2 dc, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc, with Pink, 1 dc, 2 dc in next st] four times. With Coral, ss into the first st in the round. (32 sts)
Rnd 5: 1 ch, [with Coral, 3 dc, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc, with Pink, 2 dc, 2 dc in next st] four times. With Coral, ss into the first st in the round. (40 sts)
Rnd 6: 1 ch, [with Coral, 4 dc, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc, with Pink, 3 dc, 2 dc in next st] four times. With Coral, ss into the first st in the round. (48 sts)
Rnd 7: 1 ch, [with Coral, 7 dc, with Pink, 1 dc, 2 dc in next st, 2 dc, 2 dc in next st] four times. With Coral, ss into the first st in the round. (56 sts)
Rnd 8: 1 ch, [with Coral, 7 dc, with Pink, 1 dc, 2 dc in next st, 4 dc, 2 dc in next st] four times. With Coral, ss into the first st in the round. (64 sts)
Rnd 9: 1 ch, [with Coral, {2 dc in next st, 2 dc}, twice, 2 dc in next st, with Pink, dc2tog, 2 dc, with Coral, 2 dc in next st, with Pink, 2 dc, dc2tog] four times. With Coral, ss into the first st in the round. (72 sts)
The next round has increases and decreases to create the final heart shape. This round will come out a little wavy. Rounds 11 and 12 will even it out so the edges are circular and the coaster is flat.
On the final round I do my colour changes a little differently, as I find it looks nicer. I don’t change to Pink on the last yarn over of the previous stitch and I complete the dc3tog with Coral. If you find this too tricky, you can work as normal.
Rnd 10: 1 ch, [with Coral, {2 dc in next st, 3 dc, 2 dc in next st} twice, with Pink, dc3tog, with Coral, {2 dc in next st} twice, with Pink, dc3tog] four times. With Coral, ss into the first st in the round. 80 sts.
You will not be using Pink on round 11. Do not cut the yarn, as you will use it again on round 12.
Rnd 11: 1 ch, [with Coral, 9 dc, 2 dc in next st] eight times. Ss into the first st in the round. (88 sts)
You’ll be using Pink on the next round, so lift this up from the previous round.
Rnd 12: With Pink, 1 ch, 5 dc, [2 dc in next st, 10 dc] seven times, 2 dc in next st, 5 dc. Ss into the first st in the round. (96 sts)
Cut Coral and Pink, leaving a short tail to sew in. Sew in the ends.
Your coaster is now complete!
